They are making him look more awesome, real world, and less silly. Sorry a guy with superpowers and not having the sense to put his bright red underwear on the inside of his pants doesn’t translate to modern sensibility too well.

No, it’s close minded fans of the character like you who’ve got a conspiracy against fashion forward thinking my friend. The movie makers are trying to make him look less silly.
I have mixed feeling about the Superman costume. I think it would work better if the colors were brighter and not so muted. Also, there needs to be a separation. He needs something in place of the red underwear, if not the red underwear. I don’t want to spend the entire movie unwillingly fixated on his super-bulge. “It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superma-Whoa…Uh…” I like the new Spiderman costume. It’s not that far removed from the traditional costume, yet it’s modern. I have no opinions on the female costumes.
